Toxin Exposures
"Toxic tort" is a term used to describe an ever-increasing area of the law covering topics as diverse as asbestos, lead poisoning, tobacco, and exposure to contaminated groundwater and toxic mold. While state governments and the federal government push for tort reform in an attempt to limit the explosion of toxic tort litigation in the court systems and the large damage awards that come with them, toxic tort cases continue to expand into new areas.
One of the biggest hurdles to overcome at the outset of a toxic tort case is deciding who to name as defendants. Toxic contamination can occur from more than one source, and it may not always be evident who is responsible at the beginning of the case.
We represent victims of all types of toxic exposure, including:
Asbestos—Inhaling asbestos fibers causes asbestosis and an always fatal disease called mesothelioma. Symptoms do not become apparent for decades after exposure to asbestos.
Lead Poisoning—Children who ingest lead paint chips or inhale dust from lead-containing paint can suffer permanent neurological damage. Drinking water that flows through lead pipes is also a concern.
Benzene—This toxic chemical can cause symptoms ranging from skin and eye irritation to many forms of cancer. While it is used in many products, people who work in the chemical and petroleum industry are at especially high risk.
Silica—Exposure to silica dust can cause a fatal lung disease called silicosis. People who work in glass and ceramics production, mining, construction work, ship yards, and foundries are at especially high risk.
Mercury—Prenatal exposure to mercury can cause severe fetal brain damage. Many types of fish are known to contain high mercury levels. It is also found in dental fillings, thermometers, and some light bulbs.
Toxic Mold — Exposure can cause memory loss, allergies, and breathing difficulties.
Petrochemical Exposure—Working in gas, oil, or chemical industries puts workers at risk to toxins which can lead to serious diseases.
